There are two groups of objects to set the Max Draw Distance:
1) geometry added into the editor. Example houses, barrels.
For this group we need to set the values in the editor.
Guidance is this:
| Item type | Distance | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Item inside houses | 50 | ||
| Item outdoor, size of a crate/barrel or smaller | 100 | ||
| Fountain effects (large fountains) | 150 | ||
| Trees (Manually placed) | 500 |
To automatically set those values we use a script. In Unreal editor select the actors you want to change, then in the Python command line use this command:
"G:/PSUnreal511/Scripts/UnrealEditor_SetDrawDistance.py" 5000
This will edit all the selected items, and set their maxdistance to 50 meters, it will also navigate the children components.
2) items created by the game at runtime, all the items dropped by the players, or setup by us as ApsItemActor.
For this group we have ApsItemActor::ApplyItemDrawDistance() that calculates and replicates to the client the max draw distance when an object is created/loaded.
| Item’s largest dimension | Epic distance | Low distance |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 50 cm | 50 m | 20 m |
| Up to 1.5 m | 50 m | 20 m |
| Up to 3 m | 200 m | 80 m |
| Larger items / transports | Existing settings | Existing settings |
We have one setting called "View Distance" in the settings window. The "Max Draw Distance" you set on items gets reduced by this setting. Consider that Epic setting uses the value you have in Max Draw Distance, so this value should be considered carefully with the Low setting.
For example if you want to have something visible at 20 meters, Max Draw Distance should be set at 50 = 20/0.4 because in Low setting it will be at 20.
| Quality | Value | Default distance multiplier |
|---|---|---|
| Low | 0 | 0.4 |
| Medium | 1 | 0.6 |
| High | 2 | 0.8 |
| Epic | 3 | 1 |
